Without consideration for social status, race or occupation, depression is a medical condition affecting millions of people annually.  For many years, the social stigma attached to this condition prevented people from admitting that they were caught in its frightening web.  Some were able to pull themselves free, others sought assistance under cloak of darkness; some were never helped.  Today, as we have become more aware of depression, its features, its causes and more importantly we know that there is help available for those who have come face to face with this condition.

October is

While the most common symptoms include:
feelings of helplessness, loss of hope and self-loathing
physical changes - loss of appetite, weight gain, loss of energy, pain
mental challenges - lack of concentration, lack of interest in everything

October has been declared as National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, with a special focus on screening on October 10th, 2013.  While this observance is mostly in the USA, other countries have adopted it and provide free screening opportunities for those seeking assistance.
