They come in all shapes and sizes....

...two-legged, four-legged, finned, winged, horned, hairy -  animals come in all shapes and sizes.  Whether they are pets, wild or food species, the care of animals is something not to be taken for granted.  In their own unique way, they communicate across species allowing for bonding and lasting relationships.

National Squirrel Awareness Month

For many years, the media has flooded our home and hearts with images of endangered species which need protection, abused animals that need care and adopt-a-pet programs for our consideration.  Recently I watched a presentation that showcased elderly animals - another classification of animals that need special attention.

October 4th is World Animal Welfare Day

Professor Roger Brambell, (UK), as part of an animal study he was commissioned to do, coined what today is internationally known and accepted as Brambell's Five Freedoms.

  1. Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor
  2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
  3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
  4. Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind
  5. Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
